Overview and History
Truro is the capital and only City in Cornwall and is very popular with holiday-makers for shopping and eating as well as live entertainment. Sitting on a river and boasting a busy high street, this small but lively City is a great place to stay or just to visit when you are in Cornwall. Historically Truro was founded in the middle ages and was built by the Normans, with only a few hundred living there then. Over the years it has become a market town and today has some great markets for you to explore both inside and on the piazza. Truro began to grow rapidly in the 18th and 19th century running as a port and a market town and much of the town centre was built around this time. Today the city is home to around 19,000 people but attracts a lot of visitors both on holiday and local Cornish people who come for the shops, restaurants and shows. The cathedral dominates the skyline here and is a spectacular piece of architecture. The Cathedral was completed in 1910 and I would definitely recommend a visit if you are in town.
Truro has a train station a short walk from the City centre and there are trains from throughout the country and the county. There is also a large bus station in the centre of the City and regular buses from most towns in Cornwall if you wanted to have a day trip to Truro or go and see a show. There are accommodation options in and around Truro in our accommodation section which we have hand picked for you. Also, the surrounding places are not too far away such as Perranporth where again we have handpicked some of the best places to stay. If you want to drive into Truro there are multiple car parks and a park and ride for you to use so loads of different options depending on your situation.
As we have already said we have handpicked some great places to stay. There is a luxury hotel on our site, bed and Breakfast options or holiday homes and apartments. Just head over to our accommodation section and pick which option suits you. The great thing about Truro is that although it is a City you can explore most of it by walking and both the hotel and bed and breakfast are within walking distance of the centre.

Truro is definitely the hub of Cornwall when it comes to shopping and all the locals flock to Truro on the weekends and the lead up to Christmas as Truro offers not only traditional shops but fabulous markets and late night Christmas shopping and fares. It really is the hub of the county on Christmas and just looks magical. The main highstreet is the place to find big stores and bargains and some of the smaller side streets offer some great local shops selling bespoke clothing and jewelry. In the markets you will find everything you can imagine and some great local produce as well. You really can spend all day exploring the shops in Truro and not get bored!
Truro markets are a great attraction for you to spend your days exploring and if you are around in December the Festival of lights and late night shopping are a real treat for the whole family. Truro is best known for its shopping but there are other attractions in and around Truro to enjoy. We have obviously already mentioned the Cathedral but this really is worth a visit whatever your religious inclination just for the sheer scale and grandeur of it. There is no entry fee but a donation is appreciated for a guide. Truro is also host to many events throughout the year such as St Piran’s day celebrations and summer fairs. You can also get a boat trip from Truro going all the way down the river and see some of the best countryside Cornwall has to offer. The Hall for Cornwall offers evening entertainment and you will need to book in advance for this but worth a look at their events as there are some great gigs there. There are also Victoria gardens hidden right in the centre where you can relax in a secluded garden space and enjoy a picnic or just get some sun. The Royal Cornwall Museum is situated in the city centre as well, well worth a visit with the kids as under 16’s get free. Truro also has an escape room which is a great location for either families or groups of friends to enjoy. Why not have a few drinks in one of the many pubs in town and then visit the escape rooms, loads of fun. The best thing about all of these attractions are that they are all within walking distance of each other, no car and nor car parks, just leave your car somewhere for the day and don’t worry about it.
Food & Entertainment
One of the best things about Truro is it’s variety of cuisine on offer, everything from Nepalese to Thai to Fresh Cornish Fish to the irreplaceable Cornish Pasty, Truro has you covered. There are a wide selection of cafes and bars offering food throughout the day for those tired feet to have a rest and recuperate. Enjoy a glass of wine by the river down in Malpas or watch the world go by and have a cider in the M.I. bar right in the centre of Truro in the piazza. Hub box offers an incredible selection of burgers and if you want to go more fine dining then there are some great options too, Bustopher Jones is a fantastic little place, fresh and delicious and an ideal setting. The options are endless. If you have a self catering place nearby then there are some fantastic chinese and indian restaurants too. Maybe grab yourselves a treat to take home with you. Some of the bars in Truro offer entertainment with live bands playing. There is also The Hall for Cornwall which has been renovated and is re-opening soon. Here you can enjoy everything from stand up comedians to bands to ballet, please have a look on their website for more details.
