St. Catherine’s Castle

Restormel Castle, near Lostwithiel in Cornwall, is one of the most remarkable and well-preserved examples of a circular shell keep in England. Originally built in the 12th century, the castle served as a luxurious residence for the Earls of Cornwall rather than a purely defensive fortress. Its strategic hilltop location offers sweeping views of the lush countryside and the River Fowey below.

The perfectly circular stone keep encloses a spacious courtyard, with the remains of the great hall, kitchens, and private chambers still clearly visible. Surrounded by a deep moat and set amidst peaceful fields and woodlands, Restormel Castle provides a glimpse into medieval noble life and a tranquil spot for visitors to explore Cornwall’s rich heritage. Managed by English Heritage, it is especially beautiful in spring when the surrounding meadows bloom with wildflowers.
