Places to Eat in Cornwall

28 restaurants, cafes, and food experiences across Cornwall - from Michelin-starred seafood in Padstow and Port Isaac to harbour-view fish and chips and waterfront dining.

Cornwall’s food offer is built around what comes out of the water. The county lands more fish than almost anywhere else in England, and the gap between boat and plate is often measured in hours. The 28 places listed here range from formal dining rooms with international reputations to harbourside cafes that have been serving the same thing for decades.

Padstow is the obvious starting point. The Seafood Restaurant built Rick Stein’s reputation here from the 1970s onwards - three AA Rosettes, a dining room that looks out over the estuary, and a menu anchored in whatever arrived at the quay that morning. Caffè Rojano by Paul Ainsworth takes a different direction with Italian cooking at two AA Rosettes in a building on the harbour dating from 1974.

Port Isaac has Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen, Nathan Outlaw’s two Michelin-star restaurant in a harbourside building no bigger than a cottage. The menu changes with what the boats bring in. Booking months ahead is standard.

Beyond the flagship restaurants, the county has strong mid-range options spread across the main towns. Newquay has waterfront pubs and the kind of fish and chip shops that justify a trip on their own. Falmouth and St Ives both have dense concentrations of independent cafes, delis, and restaurants within walking distance of the harbours.

The further west you go, the more the menus skew toward local produce. Cornish-caught mackerel, crab from the dayboats, and the county’s own saffron buns appear across the listings here. Chain restaurants are rare this far from the motorway, which tends to keep the standard higher than you might expect.

Booking is essential at the top end during summer. Walk-ins are more realistic at the mid-range - though even then, a Saturday evening in high season can be unpredictable.
