Watersports in Cornwall

Watersports in Cornwall - surf lessons and coaching at Watergate Bay with Wavehunters, one of the county's most consistent surf beaches with open Atlantic exposure.

Cornwall’s surf is Atlantic-generated and arrives on the north coast with enough consistency to support a year-round watersports industry. The south coast is quieter and suits stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking better than surfing. Most providers operate from the established surf beaches between Newquay and Bude.

Wavehunters at Watergate Bay offers surfing instruction, board hire, and coaching sessions from a beach that is two miles long with consistent wave patterns. Watergate Bay sits just north of Newquay and receives direct Atlantic swell without the interference that affects some of the more sheltered Newquay beaches. The wide, flat beach makes it forgiving for beginners learning to read the water before committing to a wave.

Watersports provision in Cornwall extends well beyond surfing - sea kayaking, coasteering, paddleboarding, and kitesurfing all operate from various points around the coast. The Newquay area has the highest concentration of providers. The south coast around Falmouth and the Helford is better suited to flat-water paddling and sea kayaking given the more sheltered conditions.

Most instruction providers operate from Easter through September. Year-round surfing is possible for those with experience and appropriate kit - the water temperature in winter sits around 9-10°C, which requires a good wetsuit rather than optional equipment.
