Tourist Information Centres

Every Cornwall TIC and Visitor Information Point with address, phone, and what to expect when you walk in.

Cornwall has 18 Tourist Information Centres, run by a mix of councils, volunteer groups, and the National Trust. They remain the fastest way to get local advice from someone who knows the area - and most still have free paper maps, bus timetables, and recommendations that no app captures.

Opening hours

Hours vary by season and by site. The general pattern:

  • Year-round centres (Truro, Padstow, Penzance, Falmouth, Bude, Newquay) - typically Monday to Saturday 09:30-17:00 in summer, reducing to 10:00-16:00 in winter, often closed Sundays.
  • Seasonal centres (Sennen, Perranporth, smaller volunteer sites) - open Easter to October only, often weekends-heavy.
  • Library and community-hub TICs (St Ives, Looe, Lostwithiel) - follow the host venue\'s hours.

Always phone ahead before relying on a specific TIC, especially between November and Easter.

Online tourist information

Several towns have moved to online-only tourism information, alongside or replacing physical centres:

  • Visit Cornwall (visitcornwall.com) - the official tourism board website. Best one-stop for cross-county information.
  • Visit Newquay (visitnewquay.org) - Newquay BID-run.
  • Visit Truro (visittruro.org.uk) - city-specific.
  • Visit St Ives (visitstivescornwall.co.uk).
  • Falmouth Bay (falmouth.co.uk) - Falmouth and surrounding villages.
  • Visit Padstow (padstowlive.com) - the local town council site.
  • Visit Bude (visitbude.info) - the local information service.
  • Fal River Cornwall (falriver.co.uk) - the Roseland, Fal estuary, and Helford.

Visitor Information Points

In addition to formal TICs, around 30 Cornish villages have Visitor Information Points - usually a leaflet rack and a noticeboard inside a council office, post office, library, or community centre. They are not staffed by tourism specialists but stock the same maps and guides. Look for the white "i" on a green or blue background.

Major Information Points include:

  • Marazion - inside Marazion Town Council, the Square
  • Tintagel - the Visitor Centre on Bossiney Road
  • Mevagissey - in the harbour office
  • Polperro - the Polperro Heritage Museum
  • Helston - the Folk Museum on Church Street
  • Hayle - in the Heritage Centre at the Foundry
  • Camelford - in the British Cycling Museum

If the TIC is closed

Most Cornish hotels, B&Bs, and large pubs stock the standard tourist information leaflets and will happily answer questions. Cottage owners and holiday park reception desks are often more useful than seasonal TICs. National Trust visitor centres at Lanhydrock, Trelissick, Glendurgan, and Bedruthan also act as informal information points for the surrounding area.

FAQs

Are Cornwall Tourist Information Centres free?

Yes. All TICs are free to enter and free to use. Most sell maps, guidebooks, walking books, gifts, and event tickets to fund operations, but advice is free.

What can I get from a Cornwall TIC?

Local maps, walking and cycling routes, bus and ferry timetables, accommodation availability advice, event tickets, parking information, weather and tide times, and personalised "what to do today" recommendations from staff who know the area. Many also sell National Trust and English Heritage memberships.

Are TICs open in winter?

It varies. Truro, Penzance, Padstow, Newquay, Falmouth, and Bude are open year-round, often with reduced winter hours. Smaller volunteer-run centres (Sennen, Perranporth, Boscastle) may close in winter or open weekends only. Always phone ahead between November and Easter.

Do TICs book accommodation?

Most no longer take direct bookings since the move to online platforms. They will help you find a place to stay, suggest options for your budget, and check availability with local providers. For peak summer arrivals without a booking, they remain valuable - many know which guesthouses have last-minute cancellations.

What if there's no TIC where I am?

Most Cornish towns without a formal TIC have a Visitor Information Point - usually inside a town council office, library, or community centre. Tourist information leaflets are also stocked at most cafes, hotels, and pubs in any visitor area. The Cornwall Council website at cornwall.gov.uk lists current information points.
