EV Charging in Cornwall
Tesla Superchargers, rapid charging networks, and the council\'s 42 charge-equipped car parks - mapped for visitors driving an EV to Cornwall.
Cornwall is no longer hard work in an EV. Two Tesla Supercharger hubs (a third opening), a dense network of GeniePoint rapid chargers in council car parks, and InstaVolt fast chargers at a growing list of sites mean even the far west is reachable on a single overnight charge. This page maps where to plug in.
Trip planning at a glance
- From London: Cornwall Services on the A30 (40 miles into Cornwall) has rapid chargers. Most modern EVs reach Cornwall on a single charge from London with a top-up.
- From the Midlands: A common stop is Exeter Services on the M5; from there, Cornwall is reachable without further charging in most EVs.
- For a week in Cornwall: Plan to charge once or twice mid-week. Truro, Falmouth, and Camborne all have rapid chargers; many holiday cottages now have 7kW home chargers.
- Always have a Plan B. Rapid chargers in remote spots can be in use, broken, or queued. Zap-Map (zap-map.com) shows live status.
Tesla Superchargers
| Location | Stalls | Power | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Penhale (Kingsley Village, Fraddon) | 8 stalls | up to 250kW | Just off the A30 between Bodmin and Truro. Costa, Premier Inn, retail park. |
| Camborne (Tolvaddon, near junction with A30) | 8 stalls | up to 250kW | Industrial estate setting, Aldi and Asda within 1 minute walk. |
| Truro (Treliske Industrial Estate) | Planned 12 stalls | 250kW | Near McDonalds, Costa, Pizza Hut. Construction status varies - check Tesla app before relying on it. |
Both confirmed sites are open to non-Tesla EVs through the Tesla app. The Tesla app handles ad-hoc payment for any vehicle. Pricing is broadly competitive with InstaVolt; Tesla owners pay slightly less than non-Tesla.
Rapid charging networks
For 50kW+ rapid charging outside Tesla, Cornwall has good coverage from these networks:
| Network | Location | Power | Payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| InstaVolt | Trecerus Industrial Estate (Padstow / Wadebridge) | 50kW rapid | Contactless, app, or InstaVolt RFID |
| GeniePoint | Quarry Car Park, Falmouth | 50kW + 43kW rapid | Contactless or app |
| GeniePoint | Tolvaddon Community Fire Station, Camborne | 50kW + 43kW rapid | Contactless or app |
| GeniePoint | Trevissome Park, Truro | 50kW + 43kW rapid | Contactless or app |
| BP Pulse / Cornwall Council | 42 council car parks across the county | Mostly 22kW fast | Contactless or app |
| Pod Point | Tesco Padstow (Sarah's Lane) | 7-22kW | App or contactless |
Network notes
- InstaVolt - rapid 50kW chargers at petrol stations and retail parks. All accept contactless. Fewer sites in Cornwall than Tesla but reliable when found.
- GeniePoint - the busiest network in Cornwall, mostly hosted in council car parks. 22kW fast chargers at most sites; rapid 50kW at hubs (Falmouth, Camborne, Truro).
- BP Pulse - smaller Cornwall presence. Mostly slower 7-22kW units at supermarkets and council sites.
- Pod Point - hosted at Tesco supermarkets (Padstow, Bodmin, Truro). 7-22kW. Free for the first hour at most Tesco sites.
Council chargers in car parks
Cornwall Council operates around 42 car parks with EV chargers, mostly through GeniePoint. The big ones include:
- Truro - New County Hall, Treyew Road, Trafalgar Roundabout, Park & Ride East and West
- Falmouth - Quarry Car Park (50kW + 43kW rapid)
- Newquay - Cornwall College Wildflower Lane, Manor Car Park
- Penzance - Wharfside, St Anthony
- Bodmin - Mount Folly, Dennison Road
- St Austell - West End, Carlyon Bay
- Camborne and Redruth - Cornwall College, Tolvaddon, Pool
Pricing varies by site - usually £0.45-0.60 per kWh on rapid, £0.30-0.45 per kWh on fast. Parking is paid separately. The full list and live availability are on Cornwall Council's site at cornwall.gov.uk.
Charging in the far west
West of Penzance, public charging gets thinner. There are no rapid chargers at Land\'s End or Sennen Cove. Plan for:
- Penzance - Wharfside Car Park (council, 22kW fast).
- St Just - small council charge points.
- St Ives - Trenwith Car Park has GeniePoint chargers.
- Hayle - Asda has Pod Point fast chargers.
For a Land\'s End day trip from Penzance, charge before you leave - the round trip is around 25 miles and most EVs handle it without a top-up.
Apps and tools
- Zap-Map (zap-map.com / app) - the standard reference for UK EV charging. Live status, prices, photos, reviews. Filter by network, speed, and connector type.

- Tesla app - for Tesla Superchargers and Tesla Destination Charging.
- InstaVolt app - for the InstaVolt network.
- WhichEV / EV Database - check your specific car\'s real-world range against the route.
Charging at your accommodation
Roughly 15% of our holiday cottages now list EV charging as an amenity. Filter our property pages by "EV charging" to see them. There are three flavours:
- Dedicated 7kW home chargers - the gold standard. Plug in overnight, wake up to 80%+ charge. Most are free for the cottage tenant; some charge a flat £5-£10 per stay.
- 3-pin sockets - slow (around 2.3kW) but workable for two nights or longer. Bring your own "granny lead" - the cable that came with your car. Will not refill an empty battery in one night.
- Holiday park communal chargers - usually 7-22kW, billed at the rate of the host network (often Pod Point or GeniePoint).
Hotels with EV charging
Many Cornish hotels now have at least one charge point. Confirmed:
- The Headland Hotel, Newquay - on-site Tesla Destination Chargers
- Watergate Bay Hotel - on-site charging
- St Michael\'s Resort, Falmouth - 7kW chargers
- Mount Haven Hotel, Marazion - on-site charging
- Bedruthan Hotel, Mawgan Porth - on-site charging
- Penventon Park Hotel, Redruth - 22kW fast chargers
- Carbis Bay Hotel - on-site charging
Always confirm with the hotel before booking - charger numbers are limited and may be reserved for guests on a first-come basis.
FAQs
Where are Tesla Superchargers in Cornwall?
Two confirmed Tesla Supercharger sites: Penhale at Kingsley Village (8 stalls, just off the A30 near Fraddon) and Camborne / Tolvaddon (8 stalls, industrial estate near the A30). A third 12-stall site at Treliske Industrial Estate in Truro has been built and is opening - check the Tesla app before relying on it.
Can non-Tesla cars use Tesla Superchargers in Cornwall?
Yes. Tesla has opened both Cornish Supercharger sites to non-Tesla EVs through the Tesla app. Pricing is slightly higher for non-Tesla owners than for Tesla drivers; the app handles payment.
Is there a fast charger on the A30 into Cornwall?
Yes. Cornwall Services at Victoria (the only motorway-style services on the A30 in Cornwall) has rapid chargers from multiple networks. Welcome Break Cornwall Services in St Austell also has GeniePoint rapid chargers. The Tesla Supercharger at Penhale is 5 minutes off the A30 at Fraddon.
How far west can you go on a single charge?
From Cornwall Services to Land's End is 90 miles. Modern EVs (200+ mile range) cover this comfortably. Older EVs or hybrids should plan a top-up at Truro, Camborne, or Penzance. Charging is sparse west of Penzance; Sennen Cove and Land's End have no public charging on site.
Can I charge at my Cornwall holiday cottage?
Increasingly, yes. Filter our property pages by the "EV charging" amenity. Some are dedicated 7kW home chargers; some are 3-pin sockets only (slow but workable for overnight charging). Always confirm with the host before arriving - and bring your own granny lead for 3-pin sockets.
