10 of the best fish and chip shops in Cornwall, from award-winning fryers in Falmouth and Truro to harbourside takeaways in Padstow and Looe.

Cornwall has over 400 miles of coastline, active fishing ports landing fresh catch daily, and a chip shop tradition that goes back generations. Newlyn alone is the largest fishing port in England by value, landing over 16,000 tonnes of fish worth nearly GBP 38 million in 2022. The combination of short supply chains and salt air makes this one of the best counties in England for fish and chips.

What follows are 10 chip shops across Cornwall where the fish is fresh, the batter is crisp, and the portions justify the walk. Some have national awards, some are local institutions, and all of them take their fish seriously.

What Makes Cornish Fish and Chips Different

The short answer is supply chain. Cornwall has working fishing ports at Newlyn, Padstow, Looe, Mevagissey, and half a dozen smaller harbours. Fish landed at Newlyn market in the morning can be in batter by lunchtime at shops across West Cornwall. That’s a different product from fish that’s been trucked from Grimsby or Peterhead.

Many Cornish chippies also offer locally caught species beyond the standard cod and haddock - pollock, hake, megrim sole, and gurnard appear on boards at shops that source directly from day boats. If you see a fish you don’t recognise on the specials board, try it.

Harbour Lights, Falmouth

The most decorated chippy in Cornwall. Harbour Lights on Arwenack Street in Falmouth was named the UK’s best independent fish and chip shop in 2017, England’s most sustainable fish and chip shop in 2023, and appeared in The Observer’s 23 best fish and chip shops in the UK in 2024. They won Best Fish & Chip Restaurant at the 2025 Fry Awards for the Cornwall, Devon and Somerset region.

The fish is MSC-certified and the chips are made from Cornish potatoes. The shop sits in the heart of Falmouth, a short walk from the main beaches and the harbour. They offer both eat-in and takeaway, with a full menu that goes well beyond the basics.

Location: Arwenack Street, Falmouth Why go: The awards cabinet alone should tell you everything. Consistent quality year-round.

Kellaway’s Fish & Chips, Threemilestone

The current standard-bearer for Cornwall at national level. Kellaway’s, on Pengelly Way in Threemilestone near Truro, placed 3rd in the 2025 National Fish & Chip Awards and was the only Cornish shop shortlisted in the 2026 Top 40. They also won Best Fish & Chip Takeaway at the 2025 Fry Awards.

Not harbourside, not in a tourist town, and all the better for it. Kellaway’s is a proper local chippy that happens to fry at a national-award level. Food hygiene rating of 5.

Location: Pengelly Way, Threemilestone (near Truro) Why go: Nationally ranked, locally priced. If you’re staying in mid-Cornwall, this is the one.

Rick Stein’s Fish & Chips, Padstow

The name draws the crowds, but the fish keeps them coming back. Rick Stein opened this custom-built complex on the quay in Padstow as an extension of his Seafood Restaurant empire. The fish is sourced through the same supply chain as his restaurant - Cornish day boats and Newlyn market - and coated in their own batter recipe, deep-fried in beef dripping.

The menu covers cod, haddock, hake, monkfish, John Dory, and bass, with gluten-free batter and grilled options available. There’s a restaurant section with table service and a takeaway counter. Queues in summer can stretch along the quay, but they move steadily. No bookings taken.

Location: South Quay, Padstow Why go: The biggest name in Cornish food, doing fish and chips with restaurant-grade sourcing.

The Sardine Factory, Looe

Chef Benjamin Palmer - the first Great British Menu winner to grow up in Cornwall - opened The Sardine Factory in 2018 in a restored 19th-century sardine factory overlooking the harbour in Looe. It earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2020, making it the only chippy-style restaurant in Cornwall with Michelin recognition.

Palmer describes his approach as “fish and chips but done really well.” The fish comes from Looe’s own market, and the batter and accompaniments are a step above standard chip shop fare - expect caramelised lemon and carefully sourced sides. The building also featured in the BBC drama set in the area.

Location: Overlooking the harbour, Looe Why go: Michelin-recognised fish and chips in a restored sardine factory. Proper Looe.

Chip Ahoy, Padstow

The locals’ fish and chip shop in Padstow. While tourists queue at Stein’s on the quay, regulars head to Chip Ahoy on Broad Street for fresh fish with light, crispy batter at slightly lower prices. The shop has dine-in seating and outdoor tables under a canopy.

Chip Ahoy doesn’t have the celebrity name or the national awards, but it has something arguably more valuable - a loyal following built on consistent quality and honest portions. A strong alternative if the Stein’s queue puts you off.

Location: 8 Broad Street, Padstow Why go: The Padstow chippy that locals actually go to.

Greg & Lou’s, Redruth

A triple Fry Award winner (2024, 2025, and 2026 for Best Fish & Chip Takeaway), Greg & Lou’s has been operating in Redruth since 2002 - originally as Mack’s before rebranding in 2020. Known for chips with a crunchy coating and fluffy centre, this is another inland chippy that proves you don’t need a harbour view to fry excellent fish.

Location: Redruth Why go: Three consecutive Fry Awards. The chips are the star here.

Seasmiths, Porthtowan and Wadebridge

Recognised as one of the Top 10 Fish and Chip Restaurants in the UK at the Fry Awards, Seasmiths sources its fish from Matthew Stevens of Newlyn and its potatoes from farms near Saltash. The Porthtowan takeaway opened in 2019, with a restaurant in Wadebridge following in 2022.

One thing to know: the Porthtowan takeaway operates click-and-collect only (no walk-in queue), so order ahead online. The Wadebridge restaurant takes sit-down bookings.

Location: Porthtowan (takeaway) and Wadebridge (restaurant) Why go: Top 10 nationally, with a Newlyn fish supply chain and Cornish potatoes.

Frasers Fish & Chips, Penzance

Frasers has been frying in Penzance for over 21 years, with a second branch in Helston. They were recognised at the National Fish & Chip Awards in 2021 and source all their fish MSC-certified through the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide, with potatoes from local farms.

The Penzance branch sits on the Promenade with views across Mount’s Bay. With Newlyn fish market less than 2 miles down the road, the supply chain is about as short as it gets.

Location: The Promenade, Penzance (also Turnpike, Helston) Why go: MSC-certified, locally sourced, and 2 miles from England’s biggest fishing port.

Harbour Fish & Chips, St Ives

On Wharf Road in St Ives, right by the RNLI slipway, Harbour Fish & Chips sources from local fishmonger Matthew Stevens and uses Cornish-grown potatoes. The harbourside location means you’re eating within sight of the boats, with the harbour beach as your table.

Fish is available battered or grilled, served with chips or a house salad. There’s both a takeaway counter and a sit-in restaurant with harbour views.

Location: Wharf Road, St Ives Why go: Harbour views, local sourcing, and one of the better chip shop locations in Cornwall.

Beck’s Fish & Chips, Carbis Bay

A Cornish family business since 1980, Beck’s sits on Longstone Hill in Carbis Bay on the main road into St Ives. It’s slightly out of the centre, which means a large free car park at the rear - a genuine advantage in a town where parking is a blood sport in summer.

Beck’s has a licensed bar, daily gluten-free options, and over 1,200 TripAdvisor reviews maintaining a 4.4/5 rating. It lacks the harbour-front drama of its St Ives rivals, but the fish and chips are reliable and the parking is a real draw for families.

Location: Longstone Hill, Carbis Bay (near St Ives) Why go: Family-run since 1980, free parking, and consistently strong reviews.

Tips for the Best Fish and Chips in Cornwall

A few things worth knowing before you queue:

  • Eat near a fishing port. The closer you are to the boats, the fresher the fish. Newlyn, Padstow, Looe, and Mevagissey all have active fleets landing daily.
  • Try the local catch. If the board lists pollock, hake, or something you haven’t tried, order it. Cornish pollock in good batter is as good as cod and often cheaper.
  • Avoid the busiest lunch window. The queue at popular harbourside chippies between noon and 1pm in summer can hit 45 minutes. Go at 11:30 or after 2pm.
  • Check for awards. The National Fish & Chip Awards and Fry Awards are legitimate quality markers - shops that win them take their frying seriously.
  • Watch the seagulls. This is not a joke. Cornish seagulls are fearless and have years of practice stealing chips from tourists. Keep your food close and your wits about you. Do not hold a chip above your head for a photo.
