Gwithian
Dune-backed surf beach with views to Godrevy Lighthouse
Gwithian is a small village set back from the coast above Gwithian Towans - a 3-mile stretch of dune-backed sand that runs from the Red River mouth to Godrevy Point. The beach faces northwest into the Atlantic and picks up consistent swell, making it one of the most reliable surf spots in west Cornwall. Godrevy Lighthouse, which sits on an island at the northern end of the beach, is said to have inspired Virginia Woolf’s “To the Lighthouse.”
The village has a pub (the Red River Inn), a farm shop, and a seasonal cafe. The beach itself is accessed via the Towans - a network of sandy paths through the dunes. Gwithian Academy of Surfing runs lessons from the beach, and the National Trust car park at Godrevy provides access to the headland and rock pools. The Jam Pot cafe at Godrevy is popular for post-surf coffee.
Gwithian sits between St Ives (4 miles west) and Hayle (2 miles south), giving easy access to both. The Hayle Estuary RSPB reserve is nearby, attracting birdwatchers year-round. The Red River valley behind the village contains remnants of the tin streaming industry and is now a nature reserve with walking trails. Beach parking is available at Gwithian Towans and at the National Trust Godrevy car park.
