Penlee House Gallery & Museum

Penlee House Gallery & Museum sits within Penlee Park on Morrab Road, a short walk from Penzance promenade. Originally built in 1865 as the home of the Branwell family, the house opened as Penzance District Museum in 1949. It holds around 750 paintings and is the only public gallery in Cornwall that specialises in the historic art of west Cornwall.

The gallery’s core strength is its holdings of Newlyn School work from roughly 1880 to 1930. Paintings by Stanhope Forbes, Elizabeth Forbes, Walter Langley, Frank Bramley and Harold Harvey hang alongside works by their St Ives contemporaries. Notable pieces include Norman Garstin’s “The Rain It Raineth Every Day” and Walter Langley’s “Among the Missing”. A rolling programme of temporary exhibitions draws on the collection and brings in loans from other institutions.

Beyond the art galleries, the museum covers Penzance’s social history and archaeology, with displays tracing life in west Cornwall from ancient times through the fishing and mining eras. The surrounding Penlee Park provides a pleasant space for a walk before or after a visit.
