Wild Futures' Monkey Sanctuary
Zoos & Animal Experiences in looe
Primate rescue centre near Looe, home to woolly monkeys, capuchins, and Barbary macaques since 1964. Check website for current opening status before visiting.
The Monkey Sanctuary at Murrayton House near Looe was founded in 1964 and is run by the charity Wild Futures. It is home to rescued woolly monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and Barbary macaques - many of them former pets or ex-laboratory animals that cannot be returned to the wild. The sanctuary sits in woodland above the coast between Looe and Seaton, about 2 miles east of Looe town centre.
When open to visitors, the sanctuary allows close-up views of the primates in large outdoor enclosures set among the trees. Educational talks and keeper sessions explain the animals’ backgrounds and the wider campaign against the primate pet trade. The grounds include a colony garden, a woodland walk, a children’s play area, and a vegetarian cafe. The sanctuary also runs conservation programmes for wild primate populations overseas.
Note: the Monkey Sanctuary was closed to the public for the 2025 season. Check the website or call ahead to confirm current opening arrangements before visiting.
