Notter

Rural hamlet near Saltash with A38 access

Notter and neighbouring Notter Bridge are small hamlets in southeast Cornwall, about 3 miles northwest of Saltash. The settlement sits beside the River Lynher, a tidal river that flows into the Tamar estuary. The A38 - Cornwall’s main road link to Plymouth and the M5 - passes close by, making Notter one of the most accessible locations in the county for arrivals from the east. Despite the road proximity, the hamlet itself is quiet, surrounded by farmland and river valley woodland.

The Lynher valley provides sheltered walking along the riverbanks, and the wider area has several waymarked trails through the Duchy of Cornwall estate land. Saltash, the nearest town, has a small high street, supermarket, and the Royal Albert Bridge - Brunel’s 1859 railway crossing that still carries mainline trains over the Tamar. Plymouth is about 15 minutes by car across the Tamar Bridge, giving access to the city’s shops, restaurants, theatres, and the National Marine Aquarium.

Holiday properties around Notter are mostly converted barns and farmhouses, often with generous grounds and parking. The location suits visitors who want a countryside base with quick access to both Cornwall and Devon. Looe is about 10 miles to the west along the A38 and B3253, and the Rame Peninsula beaches are accessible via Torpoint or Saltash. Cotehele, a National Trust medieval manor house on the Tamar, is about 6 miles north.
