Portloe
Unspoiled fishing village on Veryan Bay with a working harbour
Portloe is a small working fishing village on Veryan Bay, on the south Cornish coast about 10 miles east of Truro. The village is built around a small harbour where crab and lobster boats still operate. It is one of the least altered fishing settlements on the Roseland, with no caravan parks or large car parks, and access is via a single narrow road that limits the number of visitors. The Lugger Hotel and pub at the harbour edge is the only commercial premises in the village.
The coast path runs through Portloe along Veryan Bay, with Portscatho about 5 miles north-east and Gorran Haven about 7 miles west. The cliffs along this section of the Roseland Heritage Coast are made of dark shales and reach moderate height, with several small coves accessible at low tide between the headlands. Veryan village, known for its five thatched round houses, is about 2 miles north by road.
The lack of facilities in Portloe is a feature for some visitors - the nearest supermarket is in Tregony (5 miles) or Truro. Holiday accommodation is very limited; a small number of cottages in the village are available for weekly letting, and they tend to book early. This is one of the more remote corners of the Roseland.
