Poughill
Village on the edge of Bude with coast path access
Poughill (pronounced “Poffell”) sits on the northern edge of Bude, close enough to walk into town but with its own distinct character. The village has a 15th-century church - St Olaf’s, one of only two churches in England dedicated to the Norwegian saint - and a handful of houses around a quiet crossroads. The coast path at Sandymouth beach is less than a mile to the west, where dramatic folded rock formations line a sandy beach backed by National Trust land.
From Poughill, the coast path runs north toward Morwenstow along some of the highest and most remote cliffs in Cornwall. Southward, it drops into Bude and continues past the canal, Summerleaze Beach, and the open-air sea pool. Bude itself has two supermarkets, a good range of restaurants and cafes, and a castle (now a heritage centre) overlooking the canal basin. The Falcon Hotel in the town centre and several surf hire shops service the beach trade.
Holiday properties in Poughill benefit from the village’s elevated position, with many offering views toward the sea or across the surrounding farmland. The main advantage over staying in Bude itself is the quieter setting and easier parking, while still being within walking distance of the town’s amenities. Crooklets Beach, Bude’s main surfing beach, is about a 15-minute walk from the village centre.
