St Columb Major

Historic market town with Perpendicular Gothic church

St Columb Major is a small market town in mid-Cornwall, about 6 miles east of Newquay. The town was historically one of the candidates for Cornwall’s cathedral city before the cathedral was built in Truro. The church of St Columba the Virgin is a significant example of Cornish Perpendicular Gothic architecture.

The town is known for its traditional Cornish hurling match, played through the streets on Shrove Tuesday and the Saturday 11 days later. The game uses a silver ball and has been played for centuries. The town has a range of independent shops, pubs, and a central square. The north coast beaches at Newquay and Mawgan Porth are within a 15-minute drive.
