St Day

Mining heritage village near Redruth

St Day is a village about 3 miles south of Redruth, sitting at the heart of Cornwall’s mining country. The village lies within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, and engine houses, chimney stacks, and spoil heaps dot the surrounding countryside. At its peak in the early 19th century, St Day was a prosperous market town serving the surrounding mines. The village still has a compact centre with a church, chapel, village stores, and the Star Inn.

The Great Flat Lode trail, a circular walking and cycling route that follows the line of a famous tin deposit, passes through the area. Carn Brea - a prominent hill topped by a monument and the remains of a hillfort - is about 2 miles north and offers views across the mining landscape to the sea in both directions. Redruth and Camborne, the twin towns of mining Cornwall, have supermarkets, rail stations, and the Heartlands heritage centre, which tells the story of Cornish mining with free admission.

Holiday properties in St Day are mostly converted miners’ cottages and larger houses in the village and surrounding lanes. The position is central - Falmouth and its beaches are about 8 miles south, Portreath is 4 miles north on the coast, and the A30 is accessible within a few minutes for longer journeys. The village is also well placed for the north coast surf beaches around Porthtowan and St Agnes, both about 5 miles to the northwest.
