Warbstow
North Cornwall parish with an Iron Age hillfort above the Ottery Valley
Warbstow is a small parish in north-east Cornwall, about 8 miles south of Bude and 9 miles north of Launceston. The parish is notable for Warbstow Bury, a well-preserved Iron Age hillfort on high ground above the village, with substantial earthwork ramparts enclosing an oval interior. The fort is freely accessible and provides extensive views across the Ottery valley and toward the north Cornwall coast on clear days.
The River Ottery flows through the valley below the parish, joining the Tamar further south. The surrounding farmland is typical of north-east Cornwall - dairy and beef farms on moderately hilly ground, connected by narrow lanes. The village has a church and scattered farms but no pub or shop; Camelford to the south and Bude to the north are the nearest service centres.
The north coast at Crackington Haven is about 8 miles west. The inland route through this part of Cornwall sees relatively few visitors compared with the coastal areas, and the Warbstow area is among the quieter rural locations in the county. Holiday accommodation is in farm cottages and converted buildings.
