Glendurgan Garden

Gardens in mawnan smith

National Trust subtropical valley garden near Falmouth with a famous 1833 cherry laurel maze, exotic plantings, and a path down to Durgan beach on the Helford River.

Glendurgan Garden fills three valleys running down to the Helford River at the hamlet of Durgan, near Mawnan Smith. Created by the Fox family from the 1820s onwards, the garden uses its sheltered south-facing position to grow subtropical and exotic species that would struggle elsewhere in Britain. The lower valley is dense with giant rhubarb, tree ferns, and jungle-like plantings, while the upper slopes host sun-loving Mediterranean and arid species.

The garden’s most famous feature is its cherry laurel maze, planted by Alfred Fox in 1833 to a design taken from the Sydney Gardens in Bath. Covering three acres, it is one of only a handful of surviving laurel mazes in the country and has been challenging visitors for nearly 200 years. Other highlights include a tulip tree approaching 190 years old, a schoolroom recreated from the first school opened by Alfred and Sarah Fox in 1829, and a rope swing installed by the Fox family that still operates today.

Paths wind down through the valley to a small sheltered beach on the Helford River at Durgan, which connects to the South West Coast Path. In spring, the garden fills with snowdrops, camellias, magnolias, and bluebells, followed by walls of rhododendrons in pink and purple by late April. The garden is managed by the National Trust.
