Levant Mine and Beam Engine

Levant Mine sits on the cliff tops between Pendeen and St Just, within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 2006. The centrepiece is a restored 1840s Cornish beam engine - the oldest steam winding engine still working in its original mine building anywhere in the world. On steaming days, volunteers fire up the engine so visitors can see and hear it operating, which gives a far more visceral sense of industrial mining than any static display.

The mine itself operated from the 1820s until a catastrophic man-engine collapse in 1919 killed 31 miners. A visitor centre covers the mine’s history and the lives of the workers who extracted tin and copper from shafts that extended under the Atlantic seabed. Short underground sections are accessible on guided tours, though availability varies by season.

The cliff-top setting is spectacular in its own right. The South West Coast Path runs directly past the site, connecting Levant to Botallack Mine and its iconic engine houses perched above the sea - a walk of roughly 20 minutes each way.
