The Minack Theatre

Castles & Heritage Sites in penzance

The Minack Theatre is the kind of place that makes you wonder why anyone builds theatres indoors. Rowena Cade started carving this amphitheatre out of the granite cliff above Porthcurno in the 1930s, and performances have run here every summer since.

The stage has the Atlantic Ocean as its backdrop — dolphins have been known to upstage the actors. The season runs from May to September, with everything from Shakespeare to musicals. Book ahead for popular shows, and bring a blanket — even summer evenings get cool on exposed Cornish cliffs.

Outside performance times, the theatre and its subtropical gardens are open to visitors. The exhibition tells Rowena Cade’s extraordinary story.
