Congdons Shop

East Cornwall hamlet on the A395 between Launceston and Camelford

Congdons Shop is a hamlet on the A395 in east Cornwall, about 6 miles west of Launceston and 8 miles east of Camelford. The name derives from a former shop or tradesman’s premises at the road junction - a common naming pattern for Cornish hamlets at crossroads or stopping points on old routes. The settlement is small with no significant facilities; Launceston to the east and Camelford to the west are the nearest towns.

The surrounding countryside is in the upper reaches of the Inny valley watershed, with typical east Cornwall farmland of pasture and hedged fields. The northern edge of Bodmin Moor is about 4 miles south, with the moorland villages of Altarnun and Five Lanes accessible from the A395. Launceston, with its Norman castle and full range of services, is the main hub for this part of Cornwall.

The north Cornwall coast at Boscastle or Bude is about 15-18 miles west and north respectively. Congdons Shop is used primarily as a geographic reference point for holiday properties in the scattered farmland between Launceston and Bodmin Moor - it is less a destination than a locator for rural east Cornwall accommodation.
