Millbrook

Rame Peninsula village overlooking Plymouth Sound

Millbrook is the largest village on the Rame Peninsula, the southeastern corner of Cornwall that juts into Plymouth Sound. The village sits beside Millbrook Lake, a tidal inlet that fills and empties with the tide, creating a natural mirror for the surrounding hills. The village has a small supermarket, post office, pub, and the Millbrook Sailing Club, which runs racing and training throughout the season. A passenger ferry connects Cremyll - about 2 miles east - to Plymouth’s Royal William Yard, giving car-free access to the city.

The Rame Peninsula is sometimes called Cornwall’s “forgotten corner” because main roads don’t pass through it. This relative isolation keeps visitor numbers low, even in August. Whitsand Bay, a 3-mile sweep of sand and shingle, is less than 2 miles to the south. Kingsand and Cawsand, twin fishing villages on the east side of the peninsula, are about 2 miles away and have several pubs and cafes. Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, with 865 acres of parkland and formal gardens, occupies the peninsula’s eastern tip.

Holiday properties in Millbrook range from waterside cottages to larger houses in the surrounding lanes. The village works well as a base for combining Cornwall’s south coast beaches with day trips to Plymouth - the ferry crossing takes about 10 minutes and runs every half hour. The coast path circles the entire peninsula, with the section along Whitsand Bay offering views to the Eddystone Lighthouse on clear days.
