Winnards Perch

Central hamlet near St Columb Major

Winnards Perch is a hamlet at the junction of the A39 and A389, about a mile north of St Columb Major in mid-Cornwall. The location is defined by its centrality - the north coast at Mawgan Porth and Watergate Bay is about 6 miles northwest, Padstow is roughly 7 miles to the northeast, and the south coast at Newquay or Par is within a similar range. The A39 connects directly to Wadebridge and the north coast, while the A30 trunk road is about 3 miles south.

St Columb Major, the nearest village with services, has a small supermarket, several pubs, a pharmacy, and the Red Lion Hotel. The town was historically one of Cornwall’s stannary towns and hosts the Shrove Tuesday hurling match - a tradition dating back centuries, where a silver ball is carried through the streets. The surrounding countryside is gently rolling farmland, quieter than the coastal strip and criss-crossed by lanes suitable for walking and cycling.

Holiday properties around Winnards Perch are mostly converted barns and farmhouse annexes, often with generous space and parking. The practical advantage of this location is the ability to reach almost any part of north and mid-Cornwall within 20 to 30 minutes. Newquay Airport, Cornwall’s main commercial airport, is about 5 miles to the west. The Camel Trail at Wadebridge is roughly 7 miles northeast, and the Eden Project about 12 miles to the southeast.
