Lizard Village
Britain's most southerly village on the Lizard
Lizard village - also referred to as The Lizard - is the most southerly settlement on the British mainland, positioned at the tip of the Lizard about 10 miles south of Helston. The village sits just inland from Lizard Point, where the coast path reaches the peninsula’s southern extremity. The Lizard Lighthouse operates as a heritage centre with tours of the engine room and keepers’ cottages. Lizard Point itself has a cafe and views across the water to the Isles of Scilly on clear days.
The village is well known for serpentine - a greenish-red mottled rock unique to the Lizard - which is worked into ornaments, bowls, and decorative items in workshops in the village. Several workshops still operate on the main street. The village has a post office, a pub, a cafe, and a small supermarket. Kynance Cove, managed by the National Trust, is about 2 miles north-west by road and has one of the most photographed beaches in Cornwall, with turquoise water and sea stacks of serpentine and soapstone.
The coast path from Lizard Point eastward reaches Cadgwith in about 4 miles and Coverack in about 7 miles, passing through Church Cove at Landewednack, which has the most southerly church in Britain. Mullion Cove and Mullion village are about 4 miles north-west. Properties tagged “the-lizard” in the holiday listings refer to this same location - both slugs cover the Lizard village and immediate surroundings.
