Gillan Creek Retreat

Gillan Creek Retreat is an eco-built shepherd's hut set in a private meadow near Manaccan village on the Lizard, sleeping 2. Inside: a king-size four-poster bed, power shower, and wood burner. The outdoor setup is more elaborate than most - a hobbit-style covered BBQ lodge, a wood-fired hot tub (optional extra, pre-book), double hammock, fire pit, and swinging chair. Dogs are welcome.

The hut has Wi-Fi, parking, and a BBQ. No dishwasher or washing machine. At GBP 980 per week from, it's priced at the higher end for one-bedroom on the Lizard - the setting and outdoor kit justify it for the right guests, but worth factoring in if the extras don't appeal.

The cottage sits in the Helford area of the Lizard peninsula, where tidal creeks thread through woodland. Ponsence Cove is 3.8km. Helford Passage Beach is 3.9km - the seasonal ferry from there crosses to Helford village. The surrounding land is designated National Landscape (formerly AONB). The village of Manaccan has a 13th-century church with a fig tree growing from the wall. Helston, the nearest town, is about 6 miles north.

Best for couples after a genuinely remote stay with outdoor evening atmosphere. Less good for anyone who finds no washing machine a deal-breaker or who wants fast beach access.
