Carn Brea
Ancient hilltop village with a castle and monument
Carn Brea is a hilltop settlement near Redruth, dominated by Carn Brea hill which rises to 227 metres. The hill has evidence of Neolithic settlement dating back over 5,000 years, making it one of the earliest known settlements in Britain. A medieval castle on the summit, now operating as a restaurant, and the Basset Monument - a granite obelisk erected in 1836 to honour local MP Francis Basset - are the hill’s two landmarks.
The village sits between Camborne and Redruth in the heart of Cornwall’s mining heritage area. The Great Flat Lode Trail, a walking and cycling route through former mining landscape, passes nearby. Portreath beach on the north coast is about 4 miles north.
