Upton Cross

Bodmin Moor village near the Hurlers stone circles and Minions

Upton Cross is a small village on the southern fringe of Bodmin Moor, about 4 miles north of Liskeard. It sits at a road junction below the open moorland that rises toward Minions and the Caradon Hill TV mast. Minions village, just a mile or so north, sits at around 1,000 feet above sea level - the highest village in Cornwall - and is the starting point for walks to the Hurlers, a group of three Bronze Age stone circles aligned in a row that are among the most complete prehistoric monuments in south-west England.

The Cheesewring, a naturally eroded granite tor perched above an old granite quarry, is about a mile north of Minions and is a landmark visible from much of the surrounding moor. The Phoenix United Mine engine house complex, part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, is within walking distance of the Minions road. Liskeard, the nearest town with supermarkets and a rail connection to Plymouth and Penzance, is about 4 miles south.

St Cleer village, with its medieval holy well and the Trethevy Quoit (a Neolithic dolmen), is about 2 miles west. Holiday accommodation in the Upton Cross area ranges from farmhouses with moorland views to smaller village cottages, most within easy reach of the open moor.
