Upton Cross is a small village at roughly 230 metres above sea level, with Bodmin Moor to the north and the Lynher Valley below. The nearest significant town is Liskeard, around 4.3 miles south, with a railway station on the London Paddington main line. Caradon Hill, the highest point on the eastern moor, is within a short drive, with disused mine workings at Caradon Town visible on the moorland.

The nearest beach is Plaidy, a small sheltered cove at 12.1 miles - the coast is genuinely inland from here, which is part of the trade-off. Looe, with its twin-town harbour, estuary beaches, and independent shops, is around 12.4 miles by road. Downderry and East Looe Beach are similar distances. Plaidy Beach is accessible via Looe and worth the drive for a quieter alternative to the main town beach.

Right for couples or solo travellers who want a moor-edge retreat rather than a coastal base - particularly those bringing dogs and an electric vehicle. Not great for anyone who needs to be within walking distance of shops or a beach.
