Godolphin House

Castles & Heritage Sites in helston

National Trust Tudor and Stuart mansion near Helston with some of Europe's oldest surviving gardens, dating back to around 1300.

Godolphin is a Grade I listed estate tucked into the countryside between Helston and Marazion, managed by the National Trust. The Godolphin family acquired land here in the 12th century and built a fortified home in the late 13th or early 14th century. What survives today is a granite Tudor and Stuart mansion, with a distinctive north front featuring Tuscan columns and a double-loggia design added around 1630 by Sir Francis Godolphin - an Italianate style that looks more Mediterranean than Cornish.

The gardens are among the oldest in Europe. The Side Garden retains three original compartments from a nine-square layout dating to around 1300, with Tudor raised walkways and walls still intact. At its peak around 1689, the house contained roughly 100 rooms, but much of the building was demolished in 1805 and what remained served as a farmhouse until its rescue in 1929. That stripped-back quality gives Godolphin a different atmosphere to grander National Trust properties - it feels more intimate and unpolished.

The estate grounds include woodland walks and open farmland. It is a quiet site compared to Cornwall’s coastal attractions, which is part of its appeal. Contact the National Trust on 01736 763194 or check the website for current opening days, as Godolphin operates a seasonal timetable with limited winter hours.
