Davidstow sits on the northern edge of Bodmin Moor, which gives the setting a distinctly open, windswept quality - field systems, moorland, and the sound of rooks rather than seagulls. Brown Willy, at 420 metres the highest point in Cornwall, is accessible from here on foot via the moor's tracks. Davidstow Woods and the reservoir at Crowdy Marsh are nearby for walking without the exposed ridge.

The north coast beaches require a drive of around 20 minutes. Bossiney Cove Beach is 9.5km, a sheltered sand and shingle cove below high cliffs, only reachable by a steep path. Crackington Haven is 10km, a more accessible beach with a pub and car park. Trebarwith Strand is 11km, a wide sandy bay that appears and disappears with the tide - at low tide it stretches for several hundred metres, at high tide it largely disappears.

Tintagel is under 15 minutes, with the coastal castle site, island, and the recently opened visitor bridge. Camelford town is a short drive south for supermarkets and daily supplies.

Ideal for families or groups of 6 who want a moorland base with north coast beaches accessible as day trips. Works for walking holidays. Not great for beach-every-day stays - the car journey to the coast is always going to be part of the routine here.
