Penzance benefits from something most Cornish towns don’t have - direct proximity to Newlyn, one of the UK’s largest fishing ports. Restaurants here get the freshest fish in Cornwall, and the food scene has grown around that advantage. Chapel Street, the town’s Georgian high street, has become a food destination in its own right.
Restaurants
Harris’s Restaurant

Harris’s has been serving fresh Newlyn seafood from a tucked-away side street for over 30 years. The menu focuses on simply prepared fish - grilled Dover sole, pan-fried sea bass, Cornish crab - without trying to be clever with it. A family-run restaurant with consistent quality and a loyal following. Open for lunch and dinner. Book for dinner.
The Bakehouse Restaurant
The Bakehouse is a courtyard restaurant on Chapel Street with a menu that changes with whatever the boats bring in from Newlyn. The courtyard is the draw - fairy lights, palm trees, sheltered from the wind. One of the more romantic dinner spots in west Cornwall. Open for dinner. Booking recommended.
Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar, Newlyn
Technically in Newlyn rather than Penzance, but it’s a 20-minute walk along the promenade. Fresh fish from the harbour, simply cooked and served at reasonable prices. The walk from Penzance along the seafront is part of the experience - views across Mount’s Bay to Marazion and St Michael’s Mount.
Pubs
The Longboat Inn

The Longboat Inn is a pub in the centre of Penzance with a relaxed atmosphere, local ales, and pub food. Dog-friendly. A reliable option for lunch or an evening meal without booking. Live music some evenings.
Turks Head
The Turks Head claims to be the oldest pub in Penzance, with a history dating back to the 13th century. Low ceilings, stone walls, and a beer garden at the back. The food is traditional pub fare - pies, fish, Sunday roasts. Dog-friendly.
Cafes & Quick Bites
The Boatshed
A lively cafe bar near the harbour serving fresh seafood, wood-fired pizza, and Mediterranean sharing plates. More casual than the Chapel Street restaurants, with an open-air feel in summer. Good for lunch.
Chapel Street Cafes
Chapel Street itself has several independent cafes worth a stop. Lavender’s does good coffee and cakes. The Honey Pot is a bistro-style cafe with brunch and light lunches.
