Cawsand Beach is 800m away - a sheltered south-facing cove on Plymouth Sound that rarely gets the Atlantic chop of north Cornwall beaches. The twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand sit side by side with a handful of pubs, a butcher, an art gallery, and a pace of life that has stayed quiet compared to the county's tourist centres. The boundary between Cornwall and Devon ran through the middle of the two villages until the 19th century.

The Cremyll foot ferry runs from nearby Cawsand Bay across to Mount Edgcumbe Country Park and Plymouth Barbican - a short crossing that avoids a long road circuit. Whitsand Bay's exposed 3.7 miles beach is 3 miles west for open surf and wider sands.

Best for a couple who wants a sheltered, low-key base on the south-east Cornish coast with good access to Plymouth by ferry. Works for walkers doing the South West Coast Path, which passes through the villages. Less good for anyone who needs a washing machine or wants a larger property with more facilities.
