River Watch Fowey

Reverse-level two-bedroom cottage in central Fowey (pronounced "Foy"). Kitchen-diner on the entry level, living room above for the view across the rooftops to the estuary. Sleeps four (king + double). One dog welcome.

Ground floor: kitchen-diner with Nespresso, dishwasher, and breakfast bar. First-floor living room with sofa, armchair, Smart TV. Bathroom has a rainfall shower plus separate bath. The king bedroom has the river view from the upper level.

The selling point is the parking. Fowey's medieval lanes are barely wide enough for two pedestrians; most central cottages send you to the long-stay car park at Caffa Mill (top of the hill, 10 minutes back with luggage). Private off-street parking directly outside saves an hour a day in summer.

Fowey is a working china clay port - ships still load alongside the yachts. Daphne du Maurier lived at Menabilly above the town; it became Manderley in Rebecca. The Du Maurier Festival runs each May. The Hall Walk is the classic local route: Bodinnick car ferry over (foot passengers welcome), three miles around Pont Pill creek to Polruan, Polruan passenger ferry back. Half a day with stops.

Readymoney Cove (900m downhill) is the local beach - small, sheltered, sandy at low tide. The coast path heads south to Polridmouth (30 min walk, Rebecca's boathouse cove) and Lantic Bay (steep 90-min hike, one of the most photographed coves in Cornwall). The Eden Project is 8 miles; Heligan 14.

Best for: couples or small families wanting a town stay with literary depth, walkers, anyone who'd rather have parking than a sea view. Less good for: guests with mobility issues (Fowey is steep; the cottage adds three levels of internal stairs), or surfers (closest reliable break is 15 minutes by car).
