Rooms are spread across three separate buildings around the harbour - a working layout that means sea views from many, but some stair-heavy routes between rooms and restaurant. Portloe itself is a single slipway, a few fishing boats, and the Lugger - the coast path passes the front door. Walk three miles west to Carne Beach and Veryan's thatched round houses, or four miles east to Nare Head and Caerhays Castle, best in April for magnolias. The Lost Gardens of Heligan are 8 miles north-east, the Eden Project 16 miles, and Falmouth 23 miles for the National Maritime Museum.

Best for couples on a quiet-Cornwall break who want a restaurant-with-rooms on the water and serious coast walks. Less good for families with toddlers or anyone needing step-free access - the buildings are old, the lanes are narrow, and there is no lift.
