Godrevy Lighthouse is a white octagonal tower, 26 metres high, built on Godrevy Island in St Ives Bay. Trinity House built it in 1859, to a design by the engineer James Walker, after the iron steamer Nile was wrecked on the nearby reef known as the Stones on 30 November 1854. The light was first shown on 1 March 1859.
The lighthouse was made automatic in 1934, and Trinity House moved the light to a steel structure on the adjacent rock in 2012. It is monitored from Trinity House’s planning centre in Harwich, Essex. The island is a working navigation aid and gulls, oystercatchers and pipits nest on it, so you view the tower from the mainland rather than visit it.
The best views are from Godrevy Point, on the National Trust headland near Godrevy. The tower is also visible across the water from Godrevy Beach, and the headland path gives a clear view of the island. The lighthouse is said to have inspired Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse. St Ives lies across the bay.
