Tom Bawcock’s Eve is observed in Mousehole on 23 December each year, placing the 2026 date on Wednesday 23 December. Visit Cornwall links the observance with the village’s Christmas lights and the making of stargazy pie.
The tradition recalls the story of Mousehole fisherman Tom Bawcock bringing back a catch during severe weather when the village faced hunger. Stargazy pie, with fish heads set through the pastry, is the food associated with the date, and the Ship Inn on the harbour front is the pub that has kept up serving it on the night before Christmas Eve.
The date is fixed rather than moveable, which makes it one of the few Cornish traditions you can plan around a year ahead. It also falls inside Mousehole’s harbour lights season, and the two together give the village its busiest nights of the year, so a table at the Ship Inn needs claiming early.
Getting there takes some planning. Mousehole sits 3 miles south of Penzance on a coast road with tight bends, and the village has very little parking: the pay-and-display car park at the top of the hill is about a five-minute walk down to the harbour and fills early even on ordinary days. The lanes closest to the quay are too narrow for most cars, so the last stretch is walked by everyone, residents included. Bus route 6 from Penzance is the simpler option.
