The story behind it is Mousehole fisherman Tom Bawcock sailing out during severe weather to bring back a catch when the village was going hungry. Stargazy pie, with fish heads poking through the pastry, is the dish that marks the date, and the Ship Inn on the harbour front keeps up the tradition of serving it on the night before Christmas Eve.
The traditional date falls within Mousehole’s harbour lights season. Check with the Ship Inn about meal bookings and wait for the local programme before planning around a procession or performance.
Mousehole sits 3 miles south of Penzance on a coast road with tight bends, and parking is scarce. The pay-and-display car park at the top of the hill is a five-minute walk down to the harbour and fills early even on quiet days. The lanes nearest the quay are too narrow for most cars, so everyone, residents included, walks the last stretch. Bus route 6 from Penzance avoids the parking problem altogether.
