Coombe Lodge No 9

Coombe Lodge No 9 sits inside Penstowe Park in Bude and keeps everything on one level: an open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting area, a conservatory and two bedrooms. A conservatory with a dining setting adds a second place to eat.

The bedrooms are a queen-size double and a twin, sharing one bathroom with a bath, shower over, basin and WC. The kitchen has an electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine and coffee maker, and there is a TV and WiFi. Heating is electric, and fuel and power, bed linen and towels are included in the rent.

The lodge runs on an electric meter. The owners make sure it has credit when you arrive and leave a card in case it runs out; if that is used up, guests top it up at reception. Outside, communal gardens lie at the front and a private courtyard at the rear has patio furniture, with off-road parking alongside.

The shop is 0.4 miles away and the pub 0.1 miles. Pets and smoking are not allowed, and the owner cannot accept a changeover on a Sunday. The single-storey layout and queen-plus-twin bedrooms suit two couples or friends sharing; it is less good for anyone travelling with a dog.

In Bude the pull is Summerleaze Beach, Bude Sea Pool and the canal for waterside walks, with Crackington Haven and Boscastle further along the coast. Tintagel is 17 miles from Bude.
