Polruan's quayside, about half a mile down the steep hill, has a general store, the Lugger pub, and the Russell Inn higher up. The year-round passenger ferry crosses to Fowey in under 5 minutes, giving access to the town's restaurants, shops, and the Daphne du Maurier Literary Centre. The 15th-century blockhouse at the harbour entrance was built as part of a chain defence across the river. Polperro is roughly 5 miles to the west.
