Carlyon Bay is 900 metres along the coast, a long arc of sand with a surf school and seasonal lifeguard service. Porthpean Beach is 0.8 miles south-west - a small, quiet cove without facilities that is popular with families in summer.

Charlestown itself is a late 18th-century port built to export copper ore and china clay, and the harbour is now used as a filming location for period productions. Square-rigged tall ships are often moored in the inner harbour and can be viewed from the quayside. The village has a pub, a restaurant, and the Shipwreck Treasure Museum. St Austell town centre, with a rail station and supermarkets, is a short drive inland.
