Porthleven's harbour restaurants are a short walk: Kota (Rick Stein-trained chef Jude Kereama) and Kota Kai sit on the waterfront, alongside Amelie's and the Harbourside Refuge. The harbour wall is one of the better storm-watching spots on Cornwall's south coast in winter. On foot, the South West Coast Path east reaches Loe Bar and the Penrose Estate in about 15 minutes - a shingle bank separating the freshwater Loe Pool from the sea. Praa Sands, a longer and sandier beach, is 5.5km away by road. Changeover is Saturday.

Best for groups of six who want a food-focused village base with harbour character and sea views. Less good for those who need more than one bathroom or who want a family-friendly surf beach on the doorstep.
