The Nare Hotel

The Nare is a 40-bedroom, five-star country house hotel in Veryan-in-Roseland, set on a clifftop above Carne Beach - one of the south coast's longest undeveloped beaches, around 100 metres from the hotel's grounds. Privately owned and in the same hands since the 1980s, it operates at a standard that puts it well outside the standard holiday-let category: 2 swimming pools, a sea-view hot tub, tennis courts, and croquet across 5 acres of landscaped grounds.

The hotel's dining room sources locally landed seafood for its gourmet menu, and the kitchen runs on produce from the surrounding area. For guests who want to explore, the hotel runs its own chauffeur service for day trips and can arrange sea-fishing, sailing, and horse riding. The 40 rooms are split across the main house and garden lodges, all with access to the full range of facilities.

Carne Beach and Pendower Beach together form over a mile of sheltered south-facing sand, accessible directly on foot from the hotel grounds. Veryan village - known for its five thatched 19th-century round houses - is about a mile inland. The location on the Roseland puts St Mawes around 6 miles east and Truro about 12 miles north, reached by narrow country lanes rather than main roads.

Best for: couples and small groups seeking a full-service luxury hotel with direct beach access, outdoor pools, and genuinely remote surroundings on one of Cornwall's quieter coastlines. Less good for: families travelling with dogs (no pets), guests without a car (no public transport to this part of the Roseland), or anyone who wants easy access to multiple towns and attractions.
