The Old Smokehouse

The Old Smokehouse is a two-bedroom cottage in Charlestown, the Georgian harbour village south of St Austell, sleeping 4 with 1 bathroom. The cottage sits within metres of the working harbour where tall ships moor year-round - the same port used as a filming location for BBC's Poldark and other period dramas.

Inside, the layout is compact and practical for four guests, with Wi-Fi, a dishwasher, and a washing machine included. A garden and barbecue are available outside, along with off-road parking. No pets.

Charlestown Beach is 200 metres from the door: a mixed sand-and-rock cove tucked beside the harbour wall. Carlyon Bay, a wider sandy beach, is under a mile east. The South West Coast Path runs along the cliffs on both sides of the harbour, connecting west to the Gribbin Head daymark and east toward Par. The Shipwreck Treasure Museum, which holds over 8,000 artefacts from 165 shipwrecks, is within the village. The Eden Project is under 10 minutes by car, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are around 5 miles along the coast road.

This is one of the most historically specific locations in Cornwall - the last intact 18th-century working harbour in the UK, within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site.

**Best for:** couples or families of up to four who want a historically rooted base on the south Cornish coast with beaches, coast path, and major attractions close by. **Less good for:** those needing space for dogs or a sea-view property - the cottage is in the village interior with no harbour view.
