Gwithian Towans forms the western end of the three-mile sweep of sand that runs along St Ives Bay from Hayle to Godrevy. Backed by high grass-tufted dunes (towans is the Cornish word for sand dunes), the beach catches consistent Atlantic swell with both left and right-hand breaks that work for beginners through to experienced surfers.
The beach is wide enough that it rarely feels crowded, even in August. At low tide the sand extends hundreds of metres out, exposing rock pools along the reef line towards Godrevy. The red-and-white Godrevy lighthouse sits on the island at the north end of the bay - the same lighthouse that inspired Virginia Woolf’s novel.
Surf schools and hire shops operate near the main car park. Kitesurfing and windsurfing are popular here on windier days - the open bay generates clean, cross-shore conditions. The Sunset Surf cafe and Jam Pot Cafe are set among the dunes behind the beach.
Dog restrictions apply from 15 May to 30 September, 10am to 6pm. The main Gwithian Towans car park holds around 350 cars and fills early on summer weekends - arrive before 10am in peak season. Two smaller car parks sit closer to the village. Toilets are at the main car park. The South West Coast Path runs along the clifftop above, connecting Gwithian to Godrevy Point and the seal viewing area.
