Salty Cottage

Salty Cottage is a three-bedroom, dog-friendly cottage at Eastaway Manor, Morwenstow, sleeping six across two bathrooms. The ground floor holds the sitting room with its wood burning stove, a galley kitchen, a king-size double, a twin and a cloakroom, and a further king-size double with an en suite bathroom is up the stairs. Guests who need step-free access should check with the owner before booking. An enclosed garden gives dogs safe outdoor space, which matters on a property this far from any other houses.

Inside: a wood-burning stove, Wi-Fi, dishwasher, and washing machine, with off-road parking for two cars. Up to four well-behaved dogs are welcome. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms suits two families or a group of friends. Saturday changeover.

Morwenstow is Cornwall's most northerly parish, set hard against the Devon border. The coast path here is raw and exposed - 100-metre cliffs with no crowds, very different from the tourist-heavy south coast. Stanbury Mouth, a small cove, is within walking distance. Duckpool Beach is a short drive away: a small shingle-and-sand bay at the foot of high cliffs, no facilities, good surf in the right swell. Sandymouth is 2.4 miles - wider, with a National Trust car park.

Morwenstow itself has the church of St Morwenna and a clifftop hut built from driftwood by the Victorian eccentric vicar R.S. Hawker - one of the more unusual heritage sites in Cornwall. Bude, with its larger beach and town amenities, is around 5 miles south.

Best for: dog owners and families wanting quiet, rural north Cornwall with wild coast path walks on the doorstep. Less good for: anyone without a car, or guests expecting village facilities - the pub and tea rooms in Morwenstow are about a mile away.
