Rinsey Cove, a more remote National Trust beach with an old engine house above the cliffs, is 4.1 miles west. Gunwalloe Church Cove is 4.3 miles south along the Lizard coast. Helston itself holds the Flora Day Furry Dance on 8 May each year - one of Britain's oldest surviving traditions - and the Flambards theme park is on the edge of town. Loe Pool, Cornwall's largest freshwater lake, is a 30-minute walk through the Penrose Estate.

Best for: those who want a town-centre base for exploring the Lizard with a dog. Less good for: families needing ground-floor access or outdoor space.
