42 Valley Lodge

42 Valley Lodge stands on Honicombe Park in St Ann's Chapel, a hamlet close to Gunnislake and the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The lodge is reverse-level, so the bedrooms are downstairs and the living space is up. It sleeps six in three ground-floor bedrooms: a double with Jack-and-Jill access into the bathroom, which has a bath with a shower over it, and two twins. A ground-floor shower room adds a walk-in shower, making two bathrooms in all.

Climb the stairs and the first floor is one open-plan room holding the kitchen, dining area and sitting area, with a private balcony that looks over the park towards a stream. The kitchen has an electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. There is a Smart TV, a DVD player and WiFi. Fuel, power, bed linen and towels are included in the rent, and a travel cot can be requested. A decked terrace with furniture sits at the front.

Guests share the estate grounds and can use the on-site pools, gym, tennis courts and games room, and the park has a pub and restaurant. Pools and gym are booked through reception once you arrive. Under-16s cannot use the gym, and children in the pool need an adult with them. The outdoor pool opens from mid May to mid September, and the tennis courts from Easter until October half term. The nearest shop is 1.1 miles away.

One well-behaved dog is welcome, though breeds listed under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 are not permitted. Smoking is not allowed. At certain times of the year short breaks are accepted, with a strict three-night minimum. Bookings are for holidays only, with no workers or contractors, and the water supply is private and tested regularly. Off-road parking is ample. The lodge suits a family or two couples; it is less good for anyone who wants bedrooms and living space on one level, since the kitchen and sitting area are a flight above the bedrooms.
