The ships are a regular presence and have featured in several film and TV productions. Charlestown Beach is accessible on foot through the harbour gate.

Carlyon Bay, a longer stretch of sand with a beach club and watersports hire, is 1km east. Porthpean Beach - quieter and more sheltered - is 1.6km along the coast path.

St Austell is about 2 miles north, with a full range of supermarkets and services. The Eden Project is roughly 6 miles northeast. The Lost Gardens of Heligan are about 8 miles west.
