The Lantern

The Lantern is a single-storey cottage for two near Gunnislake, close to the Cornwall and Devon border. A king-size bedroom has an en-suite shower room, and the living area centres on a wood burner.

French doors open onto a garden patio with a BBQ, and an adjoining 3.5-acre enclosed field gives dogs space to run off the lead, a rare feature for a two-person cottage. Parking, a dishwasher and washing machine are included, and dogs are welcome. There is no WiFi, so this suits a properly disconnected break.

Cotehele, the National Trust house on the Tamar, is under a mile away, and Tamar Valley walking routes start directly at the door. A village pub is also within walking distance. The nearest sea is a drive rather than a stroll: Whitsand Bay, four miles of sand on the Rame Peninsula, is 11.4 miles away, Downderry Beach is also 11.4 miles away, and Kingsand Beach is 12 miles from the cottage. Dartmoor, Plymouth and Tavistock are all a short drive away, and the Calstock guide covers the nearest recorded town and the wider Tamar Valley.
