Praa Sands is 4.8km south - roughly a mile of west-facing sand with consistent surf and an easy beach car park. Rinsey Cove, a quieter National Trust cove with engine house ruins above the cliffs, is 5.9km. Prussia Cove, known for its smuggling history and protected anchorage, is the same distance in the other direction.

Porthleven, 6km south-west, has a working harbour with several restaurants and a surf break at the harbour entrance. Helston, 5km east, is the main market town for this part of west Cornwall - it has supermarkets, a cinema, and a Lidl, and the Flora Dance takes place there each May. The Godolphin Estate, a National Trust manor house, is within the parish.

Good for a couple or pair of friends who want a low-cost rural base in west Cornwall for day trips to beaches and towns. Less good for those who need laundry facilities or a garden for a dog. Rated 4 stars from 7 reviews.
