Newquay spreads along several miles of cliff-backed coast, so the beach you want to be near decides where you book. Fistral on the west side is the surf address - apartments there put you behind the dunes from the breaks and the Rick Stein chip shop. The town-centre beaches (Towan, Great Western, Tolcarne) sit below the shops and nightlife, while Watergate Bay and Porth, a little out, are quieter and family-led.

Stock splits between beachfront apartments at Fistral and Watergate Bay, family cottages on the residential streets above Towan, and larger houses out towards Pentire and the Gannel. Mount Wise is the value pocket - apartments a short downhill walk from Towan without the front-row price. August is peak, pushed higher by the Boardmasters festival in the second week, so book surf-season weeks early.

Newquay is the easiest Cornish resort to reach without a car: Cornwall Airport Newquay is five miles out with direct London flights, and the train runs into the town centre. If you do drive, most beaches have pay car parks and street parking is tight in summer, though the town is compact enough to leave the car for the day. The Gannel estuary on the south edge is the quiet counterweight to the surf beaches.

Newquay suits surfers, families, and groups who want nightlife within walking distance - few Cornish towns put beaches, bars, and board hire so close together. It is less the place for a quiet couples' retreat in high summer, when the centre fills with stag and hen groups and Boardmasters crowds. For surf without the late nights, base out at Watergate Bay or Mawgan Porth.

Frequently asked questions

Which part of Newquay is best to stay in?
For surfing, stay at Fistral on the west side, behind the main breaks. For nightlife and shops on your doorstep, the town-centre beaches - Towan, Great Western, Tolcarne - are the spot. Families and quieter stays do better at Watergate Bay, Porth, or out towards Pentire and the Gannel estuary.
Is Newquay good for families or more of a party town?
Both, and they do not always mix. The town centre has Cornwall's busiest nightlife, especially during Boardmasters in August, while Watergate Bay, Porth, and the streets above Towan are calmer and family-led. Pick your base accordingly - the beaches and attractions, including the zoo and the Sea Life Centre, are firmly family territory.
Can you get to Newquay without a car?
More easily than most of Cornwall. Cornwall Airport Newquay, five miles from the centre, has direct flights from London and other UK cities, and the train runs right into town. The resort is compact enough to walk between the central beaches, though you will want transport for Watergate Bay.
