The town centre is 2 minutes on foot, with supermarkets, pubs, cafes, and practical shops close enough to cover daily needs without a car. This is the main appeal here - Bodmin is a functional base for exploring mid-Cornwall rather than a coastal resort destination.

Bodmin Moor starts east of town, with Rough Tor and Brown Willy - Cornwall's highest points - accessible for day walks. Bodmin Jail, now partly a hotel and visitor attraction, is just north of the centre. Lanhydrock, a National Trust country house with formal gardens and 890 acres of parkland, is 3 miles south of town. Cardinham Woods, run by Forestry England, has marked mountain bike trails and a cafe.

The Camel Trail cycle route starts here and runs 18 miles to Padstow via the Camel Estuary, mostly flat and car-free - a solid day out for families with bikes. Bodmin Parkway station is on the mainline, making car-free arrivals practical.

The nearest beaches are 15km away at Carlyon Bay or Port Gaverne. Right for those using Cornwall as a moorland and countryside base, or exploring the whole county by car. Not great for those who came for the coast - the sea journey is always going to involve a drive.
